Knotweed in Salford terraces: yards, alleys and shared walls

Where knotweed shows up in terraced streets and why paving and brick walls do not stop it.

Knotweed in Salford terraces: yards, alleys and shared walls

Terraced streets in Pendleton, Ordsall, Weaste and Eccles tend to have small paved yards opening onto shared alleys. Knotweed gets through joints in the paving, along the footing of a wall and under a rear gate.

What you may see

Purple shoots in the paving in spring, a thick clump of canes in a corner by midsummer, or dry brown canes through the winter.

What to do

Leave it, take a photo and send it to us. If it proves to be knotweed, the survey shows how far it runs under your yard and the neighbours'.

Quick answers

Is the council responsible for a stand in the alley?
Only where the council owns the alley. Many are owned jointly by the houses that back onto them.
